Introduction to Horsemanship

(aka Ponies and Pizza)

Monday, Feb. 15

9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Horsemanship program is for beginning riders

Includes 2 riding lessons, craft, lunch, snacks.

  • Suggested age range: 7 to 10 years old
  • Program designed for independent children who do not require assistance to sit on a horse
  • Maximum of 6 students (beginner, or very limited riding experience)
  • Minimum of 3 students to hold program

 

Approximate schedule

9 a.m. – Arrival and basic preparations

9:15 a.m.  Get out horses and get to know them

Learn safe leading and grooming of horses

10 a.m. – Snacks

10:30 a.m. – Vaulting lessons (learning different, creative positions while on a horse)

Noon – Lunch at Ironstone’s Arts & Education Center. Pizza, beverages, dessert provided

12:30 p.m.– Finish lunch and make a craft project at A & E Center that can be taken home

1:30 p.m. – Return to horses. Mounted, in-saddle riding lesson

2:40 p.m. – Return horses to the paddock where they live

3 p.m. – Pick up.

Cost: $100 for the day, which includes horsemanship program, 2 riding lessons, craft, lunch, snacks

Requirements: registration form, signed release, boots with low heel and sneakers

Come learn what all the fun is about!

Tuesday, Feb. 16 or Wednesday, Feb. 17 

9 to 11 a.m.

  • Program designed for current, independent walk/trot Ironstone Farm riders along with an adult family member or caregiver (parent, guardian, sibling, aunt, etc.)
  • No riding experience required for the adult family member or caregiver
  • Family members will ride together in a fun, educational, and cooperative manner! Learn why your loved one loves riding so much!

Approximate schedule
9 a.m. – Arrival and preparation

9:15 a.m. – Visit paddocks to get horses out. Adults learn to lead, groom and tack up horses.

9:45 to 10:45 a.m. – Group riding lesson

10:45 to 11 a.m. –  Return the horses to their paddock

Cost: $75 per family of two

Requirements: registration form, signed release, boots with low heel

 

IMG_0944Equine Exposure: Home and Horses

Thursday, Feb. 18

10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This program is designed for current Challenge Unlimited clients who ride in our therapeutic riding program and are mobile. Parent /guardian/aide participation is required.

  • This is an unmounted program to focus/build/refresh life skills (waiting, taking turns, following directions, social skills, communication) taught using horsemanship activities and horses.
  • Lessons include: leading horses (w/ assistance as needed), grooming, and parts of the horse.
  • Following the horse experience, clients and family members will walk (or drive) to A & E Center for pizza lunch and a social program at the A & E Center.

10 a.m. – Arrive, check in, meet horses in indoor riding space.
Learn grooming, leading horses, and parts of the horse.

11 a.m. – Walk or drive to A & E Center for Social Activities Program.

Noon to 1 p.m. Eat pizza and engage in social interaction with other clients and families.

Cost: $60 per client participant (we are not charging for adult family member/caregiver)

Space is limited. Requires a minimum of 3 participants to hold program.

Family Group Vaulting

or Friday, Feb. 19, 10:30-11:30 a.m. or 12-1 p.m

  • Program is designed for families consisting of 2 to 4 members who are typically developing
  • Discover new moves on horseback and get familiar with vaulting tack
  • No riding experience required
  • Minimum age of 7
  • Family members will participate together as a group

Cost: $65 per family (up to 4 family members allowed) for 1-hour program
