This month we celebrate Austin, one of our many young riders who arrives at his lesson with smiles, laughter, and confidence! Austin started Ironstone Therapy’s early intervention program at 2 years old after the recommendation of a therapist. Austin overcame the initial fear of riding and has grown to learn how to work through challenges independently and realize learning new skills can be fun.
Austin was diagnosed with cerebellar ataxia and mitochondrial disease, and his therapy sessions have supported his goals of improving his core strength, stamina, and balance. “Just recently, he was able to complete over 20 posts in one session, which was a remarkable goal for him to hit,” his mom, Shannon, proudly states.
Austin’s confidence has also grown, with Austin always talking about his riding sessions at school, and laughing, smiling, and chatting with staff and volunteers during sessions. “The therapists would use toys like puzzles and music to keep him occupied and interested. Now, he loves to simply ride outdoors on the trails and has no problem at all enjoying the peacefulness of the farm, while chatting with his therapists and volunteers. He smiles and laughs the whole session and truly enjoys the attention from the volunteers and riding instructors.”

Therapeutic riding has inspired his parents to continue enrolling him in non-traditional therapies. Austin now enjoys accessible bowling, soccer, and baseball. “For children with disabilities like Austin, so much time is spent in therapies. He has a full schedule of therapies 4 days a week after school. But equine therapy is in a league of its own, combining therapy with nature and animals and fun! Riding at Ironstone was his first step into doing something outside his comfort zone. I’m not sure we would have known how much he would enjoy trying accessible sports if it wasn’t for Ironstone,” says Shannon.

Austin’s family also participates in community events at the farm, including Austin’s favorite, Trick-or-Treat at Ironstone Farm, spending his favorite time of year joining our herd members in costume.
