On Tuesday, June 21, Ironstone Farm held its annual board meeting, where, among the guest speakers and usual agenda, it was announced that Chris Bade will be stepping down as the Chair of Veteran Activities. As a veteran, Bade has always been interested in helping fellow service members. Our Veterans Experience and Equine Encounter programs helping veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder are what initially drew him to Ironstone Farm.
“One of the cool things about the farm is what it’s doing for veterans with PTSD,” said Chris. “It starts to break down those barriers and open them back up to communication initially with the animals and that translates to, hopefully, and often, reconnecting with people and maybe it gives them an opportunity to restart and move forward with their lives.”
During his six-year run as a board member, Bade was able to accomplish many things for both Ironstone and veterans. Much of his work here was making connections with many different veteran organizations, including Home Base Veteran and Family Care and Heros in Transition, and introducing them to the farm and its veteran-focused retreats. But Bade’s work extended well beyond connections for the farm. He donated necessary furniture to the farm’s Retreat Center and worked hard to get veterans involved in Ironstone fundraising events, such as our Swing Into Action Golf Tournament and annual Spirit of Giving Gala.
Board President, Nancy Greeley, gave a speech on behalf of the board thanking Bade for all his hard work. As a parting gift Bade also received an Ironstone cap and t-shirt.
Board members are limited to serve for two consecutive three-year terms and because Bade has reached this, he will have to step down. Stepping up to replace him is Brendan Hamm, who, along with Joe Lussier, will be joining the board. Hamm is a veteran, and employee of Raytheon, who became involved with Ironstone through the Rayvets program.
While Bade has the opportunity to run again in a few years, he is not sure if he wants to. Despite that, Bade will still support the farm in any way he can.
“It’s amazing, how impactful the farm is,” said Chris. “So you can’t help but feel great about being involved in any way shape or form with the farm. I’m happy to of had the opportunity to be involved and contribute.”
