For those attending Ironstone Farm’s Equine Encounter on Sept. 24, the start of the fall season ushered in unforgettable memories.
“It was by far one of the best experiences of my life,” said participant Lisa Lewis. “I will always remember the day with a smile and a warm heart,” she remarked.
Participants in the program ranged from ages 27-61 and included those receiving active treatment, and others in recovery. The retreat was offered free of charge thanks to a generous $2,500 grant from Boston North Cancer Association.
An equine meet and greet kicked off the morning, as members of the group got to know one another and share their cancer stories. Program facilitator Pam McPhee emphasized the importance of the shared experience the program provides for participants.
“There is an understanding that transcends coming together as strangers. Often they share what has been helpful in their treatment and are valuable resources and often become friends,” said McPhee.
As the day progressed, grooming, leading, and riding exercises explored the powerful connection between humans and horses. With a retreat focused on celebrating health in our bodies and our relationships, partnering with a thousand-pound animal gave many the chance to experience their own strength and resilience.
“I can’t even begin to explain the feelings I felt,” said program participant, Jill Niemi. “I was overwhelmed with emotion…It felt like I had come full circle, using all the tools I have learned along my cancer journey. [It was] a true awakening.”Emotional healing and self-discovery are exactly what the program aims to provide for those who come to the farm, says program facilitator, Margot Frost.
“I believe through the horses and the agenda we’ve created our participants transcend into a mindset where they realize they have choices in how to move forward: as victims or as survivors,” says Frost. “They learn that it’s possible to shift their mindset and to be powerful- physically and emotionally- as they partner with these large animals, it allows them to be comforted and let others in.”
We are so grateful to Boston North Cancer Association for supporting our cancer retreat program, and helping to provide this much-needed day of connection, relaxation, and empowerment to our participants.
