This month, we are celebrating our mighty rider, Hazel! At just five years old, Hazel inspires us all by turning obstacles into milestones and proving what’s possible, with our hippotherapy program playing a small part in her journey.
Hazel was born with an ultra-rare genetic disorder called NTRK2, affecting the neurological system and brain function. This illness is also associated with numerous comorbidities, leading to visual impairment, nonverbal communication, and weakness in her muscles.
Hazel began her journey at Ironstone at the age of two. She arrived with difficulties in emotional regulation, strength and coordination, and communication. Shortly after, Ironstone became a staple in her weekly routine. She quickly found strength and balance, and her emotions became more grounded, showing a sharp improvement in her demeanor and well-being.
Each week, we witness noticeable improvements in our star rider. Hazel sits with more independence, bearing weight in her arms, sitting up straighter, and communicating more effectively. Her success is everything we strive for through our equine-therapy services.
Hazel, you are an inspiration to so many others, and we are humbled to be a part of your journey! Your bravery, ambition, and spirit move us every day, and we are honored to celebrate you as rider of the month!
“Watching her sit up, mostly independently, and hold on to the saddle with such pride and concentration gets me every time! She has always enjoyed riding, but she sits up with minimal support now because she’s much stronger. Hazel has benefited more than words can describe. The people always make Hazel feel special. Kim [Hazel’s therapist] and the volunteers are so welcoming, patient, and calm. We are beyond grateful for your support and generosity.” -Liz, Hazel’s Mom.
We are thrilled to continue to empower Hazel through our programs and are extremely proud of the progress she has made!
