How did you discover Ironstone Farm?
I found Ironstone from horsey friends from Princeton and a google search. It’s a drive but worth it! The other volunteers are nice, interesting, and great teachers. The instructors and other helpers are so knowledgeable, patient, and energetic. It’s rewarding to help the clients and feel like I’m part of a team. Maybe my nutrition counseling (aka facilitating behavior change), exercise physiology background, and my love for animals and the outdoors make therapeutic horseback riding check all the boxes of what I’m looking for.
What is your fondest memory you have from volunteering?
I definitely know my favorite memory because it just about brought tears to my eyes! It was the first time I saw an instructor on the horse with the client. It was SO moving. It made me see that a big part of therapeutic riding was the connection between instructor and client. I’ve tried to describe it to friends, but you really had to be there to witness the love. So sweet!
What does Ironstone Farm mean to you?
The above probably answers that question, but in summary – it’s hard to put it in a few words. It’s an opportunity to learn, help others, be social, and feel like I’m part of a team. Ps. I love the fact that I’m able to lead a horse now. Wow, go me!
Thank you, Jean, for exemplifying our mission and values in all you do!
