How did you discover Ironstone Farm?
I was interested in volunteering for an organization that would allow me to combine my knowledge as a Dementia Practitioner working with those affected by dementia, my experience advocating for our military veterans, and my lifelong love of horses…. all while having FUN!
Quite a list of prerequisites! In reviewing the farm’s website it was clear that Challenge Unlimited at Ironstone Farm offered these opportunities and more!!
What is your fondest memory you have from volunteering?
A new memory occurs with each volunteer shift!! Experiencing the positive changes that occur when horses and humans connect here at Ironstone is profound.
Memorable highlights include…a veteran at one of the weekend retreats being extremely quiet and aloof at the beginning, then watching and listening to him break into song (and a huge smile) while riding in the “drill.”
A 100-year young participant in the Touch Therapy program exquisitely braid every inch of “her” horse, Jessica’s, mane. (If you know Jessica…that’s a LOT of braids!)
Observing the kids in the weekly programs obtain a sense of accomplishment, independence, and empowerment while working with the horses. It’s gratifying to witness these transformations.
What does Ironstone Farm mean to you?
I consider it a privilege to volunteer at Challenge Unlimited at Ironstone Farm and play a part in changing lives. Oftentimes, program participants will say “thank you for giving up your time or your weekend to volunteer…” however, I feel I’m the recipient of a gift each time I step foot on the farm.
Thank you, Karen, for exemplifying our mission and values in all you do!
