GET TO KNOW MADISON

What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of the job is working with the people and, of course the ponies! I often feel like it’s therapy for me to work side by side with these gentle animals. If I’ve had a bad day, I can just give them a hug and know we are going to turn it around to have a better one.

Who is your favorite horse?

This is a hard one because I’ve worked here so long I have great memories of each pony. Every single one of them has a story or memory closely attached that I remember fondly. However, if I had to choose, it would probably be Desmond. Desmond is by far one of the most patient animals I have ever met in my life. Desmond has not only proven himself to be gentle and empathetic to every one of the clients but also to any adult that works with him, whether it’s a new therapist learning the ropes or new leaders who are building confidence around horses or sidewalkers he never disappoints in his calm demeanor and sweet nature. He is truly a pony that I will remember for the rest of my life.

What is your fondest memory of Ironstone Farm?

My fondest memories are always around the gains, big or small that my clients have made over the years. Again this is hard to choose just one as I have seen children learn to walk, talk, and play, all while on the back of a pony supported by a community of volunteers and therapists helping them reach their goal. I’m not sure if there’s anything really that compares to seeing a child overcome so many obstacles, work hard, and achieve their parents’ wildest expectations. Honestly, it feels like a miracle, and I’m lucky to witness it every week.

What is an important lesson you have learned during your time at Ironstone?

By far, the biggest lesson I’ve learned working at Ironstone is that it really, truly takes a village to make a difference in a child’s life. Every single volunteer, coordinator, working student, administrator, therapist, and instructor truly has the best interest at heart in creating a fun and happy place for kids to be kids and be treated just like everyone else. It really goes to show how it could be possible in other settings.

Thank you, Madison, for exemplifying our mission and values in all you do!
