Congratulations to our Volunteer of the Month, Ruth Sweeney!🎉 If there’s a program in need, chances are Ruth is already there, ready to lend a hand! She’s incredibly considerate, always looking for ways to support the people around her and make the day a little easier for the team. In lessons, Ruth takes the time to truly connect with every rider, volunteer, and horse involved, getting to know them in meaningful ways that make them feel seen and supported.
She takes real pride in the work she does at Ironstone, and that care shows in every interaction, whether she’s caring for the horses, assisting in lessons, or joining in on one of our events. We’re so grateful for the heart, thoughtfulness, and dedication Ruth brings to our community. Ironstone is a better place because she’s part of it!

How did you discover Ironstone Farm?
I learned about Ironstone Farm from my friend and Ironstone Farm volunteer, John Ellis. He told me how much he loved volunteering and the wonderful people he met working at the farm. I knew as soon as I retired that I wanted to volunteer. I feel so fortunate to be part of such a supportive and vibrant community at Ironstone. I have truly enjoyed working alongside other volunteers of all ages and feel a real part of the community on the farm.
Even though I grew up with horses, I find that every time I work with a different horse while riding or leading, I pick up something new. I appreciate the patience that the therapists and my instructors offer me. I also didn’t realize how much I missed being around horses; there’s nothing like it!Â
What is your fondest memory you have from volunteering?
Although I’m new compared to many volunteers, I have experienced so many favorite moments. I have felt so at home working with the girls from Esparanza Academy during their weekly lessons. Watching their confidence grow week to week, and their joy when they conquer something new, makes me very happy as well. Â
What does Ironstone Farm mean to you?
Whether working with kids from the Boys and Girls Club or an individual client, I am very proud to be part of such a special place. I have been so impressed with the work that Challenged Unlimited does for the clients. Assisting the therapist during lessons and witnessing the growth clients experience is inspirational.Â
Thank you, Ruth, for exemplifying our mission and values in all you do!
